Dual Port Gigabit NIC recommendation for XG, preferably from Ebay (PCIe)

Hi.  I'm building a new home firewall, as my existing one is very slow already.  I'd like to use parts off ebay, to make it cheaper.  I have always read that Realtek NICs are no good, and should use Intel Gigabit NIC instead.

Any known working NIC for PCIe interface?

  • Hi,

you can use realtek, just be choosey and it will more thank likely affect your throughput if you have a high performance internet connection.

Otherwise do not get an i219 based card, they are not supported.

  • I have a 50 Mbps fiber internet. I assume onboard Realtek would be supported. I can use that for my wan connection. As for my LAN, I need to get extra nic. I have a gigabit network connection at home. Will the Realtek affect performance to the devices that are connected to the lan interface which is using  Realtek? This lan port will connect to my HP gigabit switch.  I am afraid with multiple devices accessing internet at the same time, and file transfers happening on the Gigabit switch, will this affect internet users’ experience?

  • Hello jang430,

It should not matter if you have a Gigabit switch and your ISP connection is lower than that, the connection made by each PC will use your your available bandwidth. Since you are going to use Sophos, you can regulate the traffic via QOS policy implementation.

  • Since nic is not optimal, if 20 devices access at the same time, won’t there be a bottleneck? In my scenario, will Realtek NICs be enough?
