Approx. every 12 Hours the Sophos restarts

Hello everyone,

I have a strange problem with my Sophos XG. It freezes approx every 12 hours and needs a hard reboot.

All services stopp, Internet is not working anymore and the webinterface is offline. As soon as I do a hard reboot, the firewall is up and running for (at the moment) approx. 12 hours. The strange thing is the reboot intervall changes, so sometimes the firewall is running for weeks without any problems and sometimes it needs a restart a couple of times per day. At the moment we are in the 12 hours time frame. Strange thing is, the reboot occurs nearly at the exact same time of the day.

Is anyone experiencing simillar problems? I thougt that it was due to TCP Flood attacks but I setup the DOS protection settings but the freeze still happens.

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

Marc

  • Hi Marc

please tell us about your hardware, the environment it is located in?

  • Hi Ian,

thank you for your quick reply.

It is used at home with 30-40 devices of devices connected but most of them without internet connection (smart Home).

I use 2 ports just WAN and LAN, nothing bridged directly on the device.

Otherwise it is a J1900 30GB SSD 4GB RAM with 4 intel NIC.

Strange thing, as soon as I upgrade another Firmware the reboot time  changes. With one firmware I havent had any problems at all, but after an upgrade the problems started again.

  • Hi Marc,

I would suggest it is your SSD being too small. I will get criticised again over the disk size, but I think you need a minimum of 60gb for home use.

I find your 30-40 devices that do not require access to the internet rather odd for a smart home. All my smart devices require internet access which I have restricted.

  • The SSD is around 50% use. I disabled a lot of not needed logs. And I dont understand why the system is working again for some time if the SSD is full. There is also no log entry regarding the reboot, it just stops working but you have no sign (slower internet connection) beforehand. After the reboot everything is working perfectly for some time unless it crashes again.

The smarthome devices are connected to my own server, and are not allowed to connect to the internet at all.

  • The amount of disk usage is not really relevant because the main partition or swap apportion could fill. What you are describing is a classic case of disk either being full (specific parts) or failing.

  • Okay. Perfect thank you.

I will get a bigger one and get back to you if it solved the problem. :)

  • Hi,

I have had similar issues since i upgraded to latest version, i did mention it on one of the threads when i had to hard reset.  I went back to SG UTM 9 for now as i had to reset mine daily between 8-12 hours.

The device i use is a Qotom Mini PC i7 with 4 Intel LAN ports, 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD.

    Thanks
