Hits on list Inappropriate websites

On our Sophos XG every day you can see a list of inappropriate websites which were seen the day before.

Every website shows a number of hits. For example there are 15 hits one day day for a certain website, does that mean that this website has been visited 15 times on that day?

Or could it be that the website is visited once, and 15 items on the specific website has been seen by the user?

  • 15 HTTP requests were made to that site.

On sites that are not blocked:

That could be one HTML page that caused 4 CSS scripts to load and 10 images.  Or it could be one html page that was reloaded 15 times.  Or it could be 15 different pages.

In modern web, 15 is quite a low number, likely just one or two page loads.

    On sites that are blocked:

Given the site is blocked, a page load will not then cause other pages/css/images to attempt to load.  So this is more likely 15 separate attempts to load.

That being said, you can easily have WebPage1 trying to load an advertisement from WebPage2.  You block the second page.  WebPage1 tries to reload the ad every 30 seconds.  So the user never intentionally went to webpage2, and in fact only loaded one page, which caused the 15 hits.

Ultimately you need more details.  Go into the log viewer, Web Filter, and search for the domain.  You will get more details including timing.
