LTE/UMTS failover RED 15w on XG Firewall does not work

We have a RED 15w for a customer that needs to use the UMTS/LTE failover functionality.

We can establish a functioning tunnel connection over the WAN interface.

We have a Huawei E3372 USB LTE stick.

We have configured the failover in the RED configuration on the XG firewall with the correct APN address.

The stick shows solid blue/green led light indicating a connected LTE status.

Yet when we take the ethernet cable from the WAN port the tunnel goes down, the RED tries to reconnect the tunnel but it doesn't seem to switch over to UMTS/LTE failover. And after some time trying to reconnect the tunnel the RED reboots. And that's it. Unless I reconnect the WAN port, no connection is available.

The Sophos XG firewall has SFOS 17.1.3, the RED firmware version is  2.0.016

Is there a way to check whether the LTE stick is actually having a working connection on the RED?

The stick must exist in the firewall as an interface with a routing etc. Is there any way (i.e. through the console) to see whether the interface is really connected and to test whether traffic can be sent through it (i.e. a ping)?

Is there any other thing we need to consider or have overseen?
