What is the difference between an AP55 and an AP55c

I have been re-arranging my network to use VLANs over the wifi. As an interim measure I built the new network using and AP55c.

When I was happy that the new network was connecting reliably I move the network over to the mounted AP55 so I had both a AP55 and AP55c providing internet access.

Both AP55 and AP55c are rev (ETSI). The Ap55c is rated at 12v 1.5amp while the AP55 is rated at 12v 4amp.

Now what caused the question is that most devices preferred to connect via the AP55c which was sitting on my desk in a room further away than the AP55 and the connecting devices.

I also note that the Canon printer only connects at 72mb/s to the AP55 while it connected at 150mb/s to the AP55c.

Yes, I know replace the AP55 with the AP55c, but that still doesn't answer the question.

  • Performance wise there does not appear to be anything obvious. I would need some networking tools to identify any differences.

I have been able to get all 3 APs back online. Two AP55s and an AP55c. I thought one AP55 had died during my VLAN over wifi build, no just the APs cannot handle two managed switches in tandem and being added using a wifi VLAN. They need to be added to the XG using a normal connection then when activated change to use VLAN.

  • The big difference are the antenna, which are build in the C.

So basically it uses another radius.

While you can use the AP55 on the desktop, you are most likely to place the AP55c on the wall.

And yes - you need to give the AP always the VLAN tag via untagged first. It is the "Chicken_or_the_egg" issue all over again. How should the AP knows, which VLAN he has to use, to connect to the XG, if there is no reference to get to a vlan.

  • Hi,

thank you, I was aware of the physical differences and the AP55c should more than likely be ceiling mounted because of the way the aerials are set against a metal base.

I am more interested in the difference between the 2 external and the 4 internal aerials, there must be at least some benefit?

If you have deleted an AP and then added back later, there is some configuration memory because it does start up with a VLAN assigned but will not connect but is assigned an IP address from the VLAN , strange behaviour?
