Unable to boot to installer disk (CD or USB) - no error

Hello,

I am attempting to move from the Sophos UTM 9 to Sophos XG firewall (both home use licenses), but have been unable to get the computer to actually boot to the XG installer disk to even start the installation of XG.

I first burned the ISO to a CD and tried booting to that - when I select that option from the boot menu, I just get a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.... no error, nothing. Next, I tried installing via a bootable USB (created with Rufus, in DD mode) and I see the same frustrating blinking cursor. No error, nothing!

Perhaps my system isn't supported? It works fine for UTM 9...

I'm running a custom build, with Intel D2500CCE motherboard with embedded Atom D2500 CPU, 4GB RAM, 320 GB HDD.

Looked up some install issues in the forums, but they all seem to specify errors, which I don't have.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

  • Hi,

how long did you wait before giving up with each install type?

Also did the disk start to spin after it was selected.

The real question is what version of the software did you download?

  • Hi Ian,

I waited several minutes each time, before giving up... up to 5 minutes or so, at one point.

Also, the download I got is whatever popped once I selected the Sophos XG option under "free tools" section on Sophos' site, entered my info, and acknowledged the EULA. I'm guessing its 17.1 based on the name of the file (which is SW-17.1.4_MR-4-254.iso).... which now that you mention it seems a bit odd since isn't the latest version 17.5?

Also, when using the CD... it would spin up once I selected the option to boot to it, but then spin down after that with no activity from then on.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Tim.

did you get a licence in the email?

I wouldn't worry about the v17.5 version that will download to your machine once you have connected on line.

What is the ending on the software, SFOS?

Do you have a windows installation disk to see if that will start the install process to show that it is a XG issue?

  • Hi Ian,

Sorry, but how do I find the ending on the software to see if it is SFOS? Thanks!

As far as trying to install something else to prove it's the XG issue, I haven't tried that yet - I do have a Sophos UTM 9 disk (that I used to install the UTM last time), so will see if that boots when I get the chance.

  • Hi Tim,

that version looks correct. Do you have another machine to try it on?

    Ian
