Fanless box with gigabit thorughput

Hello, I'm a XG Home user (ESXi appliance), and was thinking of acquiring a physical appliance to install at my sister's, to install XG Home there as well.

I have 1000/300 fiber at home, and she should be getting the same in the coming weeks. So I was thinking IPSec tunnel from here to there... Looking at Sophos' portfolio, the XG 115 Rev 3, seems to fit the bill in terms of throughput (it's no fun if we can't push 300 Mpbs both ways through the tunnel, or lose hundreds of Mbps in the Downloads department for normal web surfing)

The problem is the $595/€670 (VAT incl) price tag. Although, I could afford it, I wouldn't mind spending much less :)  Do you know of any pFSense-like ready boxes, with sufficient processing power, that could compare to the XG 115 AND run XG Home without issues ?

Thanks!

  • Look on Amazon for Partaker units, ive just got one of those for someone and it covers all the bases.  Just make sure you get an Intel I3 min, the celeron cpus just wont cut it.

this was the one i got in the end

It has i3 with Hyperthreading so you get 4 cores and its got 8gb ram so it will utilise the XG home editions max HW specs.  Also its got a 120gb ssd and 6 lan ports.  Its also fanless.

there are desktop models too its just a case of going through them all till you find one thats I3 cpu min with HT on it, 8gb ram and 120gb ssd.

    hope that helps

  • Hello,

i recently bought a barebone (fanless) that has 4 Intet GBit NIC's, 8GB RAM and a 120GB SSD allready installed (4 Core Intel J1900).

The Devie is working very well and priceing was OK for the requirement of the SOPHOS XG-Home.

  • Hi,

I have one of those devices and the throughput was very good, but changing the configuration was very frustrating, so I went back to my 3e-1225 v5. I have found the performance to be better.

  • Thanks for pointing the i3 as a minimum, when writing my question, I was thinking of compatibility in terms of hardware/drivers etc, not max specs for the XG Home license... I had totally overlooked that point.

I've seen the same devices under different brand names on Aliexpress (although, I would probably not buy that expensive equipment direct from China... :) ), and Amazon France, where I'm from, so I'll look into it.

    Thanks again

  • Bare in Mind to check your CPU either is quad core or dual core with Hyper Threading, as i said in my original reply Sophos XG Home Editions max Spec H/W is 4 cores and 6gb ram and i can tell you this from experience you really need to max the home edition out and an I3 with Hyperthreading will do that.  When you have Firewall rules setup with Web Filtering, HTTP & HTTPS Scanning enabled, IPS enabled & ATP enabled you will be glad you made the investment.

Also there are several manufacturers that make similar units but Partaker seemed to be one of the best that i found and have since used.  As long as its made by Partaker i dont suppose it matters where you buy it from.

If you need any more advice feel free to PM me.
