XG 330 REV.2 Freezing & Locking up

Hi everyone!

I have been on a hardware rollercoaster with this product. I recently purchased the XG 330 REV.2 last year. Everything was working fine, I made a few firewall rules and have a couple of VLAN's. but nothing too serious. I scoped out the unit to be 4X as much we need and we are not even scratching the surface. Anyway the CPU barely reaches 4% at peek hours, RAM 11% - 25% peek hours. So again nothing too serious going on. Long story short it ran for half the year then started having problems. The GUI will start coming back with java and tomcat errors and was unaccessible. Strangely enough traffic still ran local and WAN. Then the unit started locking up completely and reboots were needed every day sometimes twice a day. I called support ad after a few hours of them checking logs they came to the conclusion that the "Drive was going bad" and the unit needed to be replaced. Im like thats fine but I need you to overnight it to me. They did thankfully for free and I had the new box up and running, restored and all. About 3 months running the new box glitches and the GUI when accessed started to run super super slow whenever I clicked on something in it. Traffic was still passing at regular speeds with no interruptions. A reboot was needed to get the GUI to act normal again. Ran for a couple more weeks then the same issue occurred this time with a java exception error traffic still flowing. Another reboot and back up a month later and total system lockup occurred again and now currently have a case open with support.

I do not know what is going on I really want to love the XG its really powerful but if this keeps happening we may have to move forward with another company.

I should mention that I have one service running which is web protection module .... thats it. and I only have 1 firewall rule logging traffic out of 11 rules. Also I notice that when we have power outages when the unit comes back on a couple weeks pass or months these issues start happening. The unit is not on a UPS but will be now because of its SSD. I am think that may contribute to the cause of failures is the sudden loss of power leading to possible data corruption. I really don't know because other people have been having my issues and I don't think they too have suffered from power outages.

All I know is we have paid almost 7 Grand to have this product and its services WORK and to have these issues is purely ridiculous. I am truly at my wits end with this. Feel free to ask me questions or give advice if you have any. I will continue to post here on my progress.

Thanks for reading.

by the way my WAN uplink keeps going up and down randomly sometimes. ISP is sending a tech today to see if its anything on their end.

*may have typos above* :)

  • It may sound obvious but if you are experiencing power failures get a UPS. Consider an inverter with battery packs if the power is down for extended periods. Make a backup of your config and re-image the device. If this does not work then raise a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) with Sophos.

  • Thanks for the reply. I ordered a UPS that was my next step anyway for long term. Backups are sent to my email weekly so that is already covered and I already restored once from a backup when a core service died permanently on the 2nd unit. If anything happens again I will raise a RMA for the 2nd time. That will be my 3rd device but, you know what the saying is, "3rd time is the charm". Again thanks for the feedback.
