XG MTA Mode, unable to authenticate to smart host.

Facts

  • I've recently configured my XG  SFOS 17.1.3 MR-3 to run in MTA Mode.
  • It sits in front of an onsite Zimbra server and is accepting the email for the zimbra server's domains without any issues. The Zimbra server uses the XG as its smarthost.
  • I send outbound SMTP via Sendgrid, using their API key facility to send using SMTP transport to smtp.sendgrid.net.
  • I have followed this guide on using a smarthost.

Problem

  • Outbound email will sit in the XG's Mail Spool with a Failed status on it, eventually it will be bounced back to the sender with the following detail.

Mail delivery to following recipients failed:

recipientaddress@gmail.com - 550 Authentication required for connections on TCP port 587

I have made sure that I've configured the XG to use a smarthost, on port 587 and have selected to authentication with the smarthost.

These exact same settings work with Sophos UTM.

The current behavior is like the XG has ignored the smarthost settings, and eventually times out.

How do I access more verbose logging so I can understand what's happening?
