Can you update RED firmware on individual units rather than pushing it out to all REDs at once?

Alas tis disappointing news.  If something goes wrong can the XG easily trigger a rollback or will I have to have people onsite with USB sticks?

USB sticks are used for manual device deployment, it is used to push the configuration. It will not help you recover the RED device. 

You can use the provided recovery tool as suggested in the KBA here: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/118843. Alongside, if it is a RED50 device then recovery is not required unless it is bricked as these models have dual boot.
