DHCPv6 on XG issue

Hi folks,

Back ground. I have been trying to debug the IPv6 settings on my XG, according to one site it is misconfigured according to other sites it is correctly configured, confused. Firewall rule pass traffic. I have a new network connection which runs at 50/20 so converted my MAC to a ethernet connection from a wifi connection hoping to improve the network performance.

The issue is the DHCP6 server on the XG hands out the IPv6 address to the disabled wireless card on the MBP as shown by the MAC address and the IP4 address to the ethernet interface. I have tried restarting the XG, the MBP, I have changed the IPv6 assignment range and still the issue persists. I have deleted all references to the MBP wifi in the XG.

This was not an issue when using the wifi because I did not have an ethernet connection. I will check my wife's older MBP with inbuilt ethernet interface and update this post.

Update: my wife's MBP has the same issue. Both running 10.13.6

So what is the answer?

  • Are you setting Managed Flag of IPv6 Router Advertisement?

    Configure > Network > IPv6 Router Advertisement > Managed Flag

    Hi folks,

    there is something wrong with my XG IPv6 configuration. Used to work fine but not now. Have disabled IPv6 for the moment while I try to figure out what has gone wrong.

    Hi folks,

    further updates and configuration changes.

    I restored from an older backup, cleaned up the active ISP connections now only have 1. IPv6 now works, traffic pass and web pages load correctly and the test site agrees all is reasonably well.

    The original issue is still there and something slightly different is that you can assign static IPv6 addresses from within the DHCPv6 pool range. Because the DUID is machine generated you cannot force the use of the correct MAC component, I haven't tried, just assuming.

    More little stories about IPv6 on the XG.

    1/. if you assign an IPv6 address statically it does not show on the IPv6 lease list.

    2/. I have created IPv6 clientless group which work. You cannot add IPv6 clients to your groups with IP4 addresses,, the firewall rules do not recognise the IPv6 clients. therefore no traffic.

    3/. you can create the same name in both PI4 and IPv6 DHCP servers but you cannot create the same username in clientless groups.

     

    I think I need to go to back to my faster box. This current box while very power efficient and performs well from a user point of view is very difficult to configure because all changes take too long to register. This morning I actually managed to crash the box while updating the time zone from Sydney to Melbourne and synchronising the time.

    Another update: I changed the /56 to the correct one and did not get any test failures, but the DHCP server assigns the address at the end of the range and when you use the assigned address in a static assignment you receive an error - unable to update DHCP configuration.

    Changed to one address below the end of the assignment range and all works well again.
