Need help from Sophos Dev Team for Hardware for XG Home Editin.

Hi All,

I'm new is Sophos community, first I want to thanks Sophos for releasing the Home Edition of XG Firewall, very important to have a safe network at home, I have researched for best hardware for Sophos XG and after a while checking and knowing that many people have problem with Wireless, and compatible hardware, I decided to find a mini pc that has every element that one good Soho firewall need.

what I have found was Gigabyte brix iot:

https://www.gigabyte.com/Mini-PcBarebone/BRIX-IoT

this is a very good hardware as it has 2x 1000Gb ethernet interface, 1x Intel AC wifi, sim card slot for 3G (need a PCIe card, Maybe work with 4G) up to 8GB ram (home edition is locked to 6GB), m.3 slot for SSD, 4x usb3, no fan as it's fanless, very small micro pc, Price around $350 or £270.

as you see this is good for Home Edition 3 important component ( 1gb ethernet, ac wifi, 3g) I have installed Sophos XG and it's really fast I have 300mbps and it can easily handle that speed.

now let talk about problems after I have installed the XG OS:

1- ethernet interface is detecting 10mbps, (easy fix, login and set to 1000mbps) should fix the issue.

2- wifi I believe the driver for inter AC  card is not included on XG OS ( I have tried to add the driver but file system was locked and was read-only therefore can't installed driver (easy can be fixed by Sophos Dev team by adding the intel driver in the OS build)

3- 3g, unfortunately, didn't have any car to test the 3g or (4G LTE), if anyone knows a card can work with Sophos please recommend.

I hope Sophos Dev team check this forum and add the drivers which will be a base hardware for a home user.

Thanks All

Parham

  • Hi,

1/. of all please remember this is a user to user forum which is sometimes visited by Developers (very rarely).

2/. the developers do not add software as per your request to a commercial grade product.

3/. the home user XG is a licence only restriction, the same software is deployed to the commercial production equipment.

4/. the on board WIFI does not work with the installed software, you will need to search the forums for advice on how to get a third party wifi card to work.

5/. The onboard 3g/4g card will more than likely not have drivers installed, will more than likely need a compatible USB device

6/. Your internet speed connection can be a old model NIC on the far end that is not setup for auto negotiation or a faulty cable.

    Happy security

  • Hi Ian, and thanks for information, I could'tfind any AC wifi Card that work with Sophos XG, If you know can I ask to share with me, I'm all aware that Sophos XG is a Comercial product and they are kindly release for Home Users as Free, my point is can they released a hardware supported list too?!! :)

HoneslyI like XG and I shouldn't complian (I'm really not Complaining) I checked the drivers which I can see Arthos ATH9K is there, but that is already a old driver and can just suppot 802.11n (Too Old), I hope they will add ATH10K or Intel (In the custome ISO)

  • Hi Parham,

the quickest way is to buy a Sophos AP, but they are not as good some of the other home APs for a similar price. The only downside is that they are not managed by the XG. My new ISP supplied modem/router comes with a 1366 or greater throughput 5ghz channel, not much use when the interface is only 1gb/s unless your other end is on the same AP?

You can always add features to the feature request forum then ask people in this forum to support your request.

  • Agreed, the Sophos AP is not look too updated, and too pricey, I really went through loud of Micro PCs, Appliance, even PFsens or SG125W, all was old and not completely work with XG, the hardware I find was small and close to good was that Gigabyte and its affordable too Hope Sophos add some driver for it, I will try to order some different wifi card as well as 4g and will update it here.

  • Hi Parham,

the box I am currently running XG on is a small fanless one with 128gb ssd, 4 intel NICs and 8gb of ram. Works okay on my slow internet connections, which I expect to be upgraded later this week.

Don't waste your money on buying internal devices, best to get an external AP that can be raised and put in better locations than siting a box with lots  of  leads. The 4G device will need to be a compatible USB one. I am not sure which ones are currently compatible.
