Zbox CL327 Nano Installation

So, I've done some looking, and I found one person talking about an issue here: https://community.sophos.com/products/xg-firewall/f/initial-setup/15852/firstboot-failed-on-software-install#pi2151=2

Thing is, that isn't my issue. I can't get the device to see anything I create with Rufus/Win32Diskimager  (having tried both the HW and Intel versions with both ISO and DD) as a bootable disk. I've even written the ISO to a DVD and used a USB DVD to try to accomplish the install, and the thing just doesn't see anything as bootable.  Typically, when the write is completed in Windows, an ISO write will show me the file structure that I expect to see, while DD leaves Windows thinking that the USB stick is completely unformatted.

I thought maybe I was just having some serious issues, but I pop in a Win7 disc into the DVD drive, and poof, installation screen comes up.

Can anyone give me a suggestion? And tell me exactly which file I should be trying, and, preferably, the exact Rufus options?

Note: Just for fun, I've tried the same thing with UTM 9.509, and I'm having the same issue, only difference being, since it's not a hybrid image, I'm not even given the option for a DD write. But the Zotac just doesn't see a bootable disk.

Thanks

-Meri

  • Hi Joe,

    Welcome to the Sophos Community.

    I use a Zotac CI323 Nano, a similar beast, and yesterday I re-built my zbox, and came across an issue with the USB flash drive which just would not boot, found a new USB flash and all installed fine.

    for me this is what I did;

    1. Get latest Rufus 3.1 (current as of 20 august 2018). I had an older version and it wouldn't work write to the USB correctly.

    2. Write to the USB and follow the recommended directions (I always do).

    3. Also ensure you have the correct and latest BIOS for the zbox, I had a few problems with another unit, it seems who ever had it before me had written the incorrect BIOS to it (lots of Linux kernel panics).

    There is one thing I did hear of a problem with one of the zboxes that did not support Linux drivers for the NICs, I think it was one of the newer units.

    I found the post - https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/f/hardware-installation-up2date-licensing/92497/zotac-zbox-nano-ci547

    you might find this useful..hope it helps
