[BRIGDE NETWORK] Why to do we need IP address in bridging 2 networks?

I am currently studying the Sophos XG Firewall and also trying to further study networking.

In short, I am a newbie to this industry.

I just want to know why do we need a IPv4 address in order to bridge two (2) networks?

Also, about the IPv4 address that I am going to put.. can I assign my own IPv4 address?

Thus assigning IPv4 address helps me in communication or managing the two networks? Like if I put 192.168.253.1 as bridge IPv4 address does it lead me to admin webconsole if I typed it in my browser.

Thank you so much in advance. I know that this community is great.  God bless!

  • Hi,

you need the IP address assigned to the XG so you can access the management GUI. The XG also requires an address as a destination for Anti-package updates as well as a source for email reports.

I would suggest that you also have a 3rd port to allow for access. You cannot assign an IP address to the bridge from the IP address range of the traffic passing through the bridge, that is why you need a 3rd port so you can change the address ranges of your bridge.

  • Can you elaborate more sir? So I am going to assign an IP address that is not on the IP range of my network. Does that mean I can assign my own Bridge IP address.

Thanks for answering if I can access admin webconsole using the assigned IP address. Thanks!

  • Hi Marvin,

no you can't, it has to be in the IP range of your network otherwise you will not be able to connect to it, basic networking.

  • Hi Marvin,

    Good day!

It is not required as it is a bridge deployment but if you need Updates,Management of GUI and other services of XG that needs internet connection it should have an IP address for these reason or else you could not maximized the capabilities of Bridgemode. Why the Ip address should be on the same network? Its simply for the internet connection provided by your main Firewall or gateway solution.
