Setting up XG Home Edition on PC for home network

Hi,

I'm wondering how to use a spare PC with two network interfaces (which I would install the Sophos XG free home edition on) to create a home network, both wired and wireless.

As far as I can tell, I would have a router which plugs into the wall, which goes to the outside Internet.  The PC then connects to the router, and a switch providing a LAN connects to the firewall box's second interface, and this is where I can plug in a laptop and desktop, etc.

How would I add wireless to this?  Can I add a wireless base station (like some kind of wireless hub/router) to the switch, to share the LAN's connectivity to devices that connect wirelessly?

Thanks for any tips on home networking... I'm thinking of a simple SOHO router, maybe a low end Ubiquity, where this plugs into the NTD port on the box on the wall, with a cable to a NIC on the PC running Sophos XG, then a cable on the second NIC to a gigabit switch (not sure which one yet, just a basic home/small office device), then a wireless AP base station to provide wireless connectivity to the switch, and those with ethernet cables just plug into the switch.

  • If i were you, i would like to connect my modem (main router with the internet service) as bridge (or not if you are planing to use the dhcp from here) to the LAN 1 (will work like WAN) of the PC (with sophos firewall), then LAN 2 (will work like LAN port) to the switch.
