Have installed a new XG running 17.1 but even though I restored from a backup and applied the same serial number I still get.
Failed
Hostname already taken.
Any ideas?

Is it the same appliance that you registered your DDNS hostname to? Or did something change on the hardware side?
I would suggest you, downgrade to the previous version which must be available in the Backup & Firmware > Firmware section, then deleting the DDNS configuration and switching back to the latest version and finally, reconfiguring the DDNS hostname entry.
If you still face an error, get a case registered with support and our CIS team will be able to fix it by unbinding the database record for the hostname entry.
