Filter Email for Exchange 365

Hi,

I saw some blog's about using Exchange 365. What we want is to use the Sophos as a spam and AV filter for inbound mails, but not use it for outgoing emails. We want to receive the mails through Outlook and mobile devices connected to Exchange.

So I need to configure the MTA and change the MX records to point to the Sophos. But how do the messages get back in the Exchange boxes after filtering? What do I need to do for that?

Thanks

Pieter

  • XG email protection is really only used for onsite Email server setups, Office 365 would not apply.

XG firewall rules with web protection and Malware scanning will cover what you want.  I have Office 365 myself and i only use XG with standard Web protection on the Firewall rules which scans all traffic including Outlook client to Office 365 traffic. Office 365 has Spam protection built in, If you require a third party Spam service look into Sophos Central email protection I also use that for Office 365 protection for Spam etc.

So Email protection module isnt needed in this situation. Unless you actually are using a hybrid Office 365 deployment with On Premises Exchange servers still.

  • Thanks JK, but does your setup scan the incoming mail?

  • Yes as long as the firewall rule is set for HTTP & HTTPS scanning.  Office 365 in Outlook clients uses HTTPs traffic so as long as you enable that on the Firewall rules you will be covered.  XG wont give you Anti Spam in this situation but as i say its not really needed, If you do require 3rd party solution look into Sophos Central Email protection its geared up for Office 365.  But Office 365 does have Anti Spam and Malware scanning built in but I double up on Email Malware scanning by doing what i mentioned on XG.

  • That makes sense, and it saves a lot of trouble with the MTA mode. With legacy mode, all other smtp clients work properly.

I have a LAN - WAN rule with HTTP and HTTPS scanning and Sandstorm, so that should do the trick then.

Thanks a lot for your comments

  • Yeah thats all you need for Office 365 clients ie Outlook.  The XG Email Module is really built for On Prem Email servers or Email Relays.

As i mentioned, If you do need a Spam / Malware Email solution as you do find the Office 365 out the box solution is working I stronly recommend Sophos Central Email.  I use Sophos XG with Sophos Central and the solutions work hand in hand.

Are you using XG V17.1 yet??  If you are a licenced XG user the new Cloud App security feature is very exciting.  (Gives you fine grained control for Office 365 built into XG now with regards to App control)

Anymore questions feel free to PM or post again.

Dont have all the answers but ive been using UTM then XG for quite a while now.
