Sophos XG Home - Proxmox KVM

I am running Sophos XG home on proxmox as a VM.  I have been running since 17 beta and I no performance issues.  I did notice recently however that if I use the default kvm-64 processor type my cpu usage on the sophos vm is really high.  It sits up around 50-60%.  Whereas, if I change the cpu type to "host" (which is not ideal) it drops back down to 2-4%.  I would really rather not have to run on "host" since that can cause me problems when changing servers... has anyone else run into this behavior?  Are there any suggestions out there on where to start looking?
