Multiple IP/Subnets on single WAN physical interface

Good day,

We purchased a new subnet for a client of us.

The default IP is like:

217.63.AAA.BBB connected to Port2

we have a subnet with the ip:

212.115.CCC.DDD/29

This ip range is routed to 217.63.AAA.BBB

I wanted to add an alias to the Port2 with the subnet 217.63.AAA.BBB/29.

The error I receive is: You cannot enter a network IP for IP Address

I cannot understand why this is. With all other advanced routers it is so simple to configure.

What am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance,

regards Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

The reason why it is not letting you add the alias is because the IP that you are inputting is the Network Address. If you have a /29 subnet, you have 6 usable host.

Let's say you got given the range 217.63.103.240/29. The IP addresses that you can configure from this range are only 217.63.103.241-217.63.103.246. 217.63.103.240 is not usable because it is the network address and 217.63.103.247 is also not usable because it is the broadcast address.

It is not possible, AFAIK, to enter a whole subnet in one alias. You would have to create 6 aliases on Port2 for each of the usable host in that subnet.

    Hope that helps!
