How Do You Handle Applying Different Policies on Student and Staff Devices?

What is your preferred method of maintaining different policies for different groups of users and managing those users' devices?

In the past I have set a strict default policy and then exempted certain staff devices based on MAC address. This of course gets messy when you have lots of devices.

I like the idea of allowing users to logon to the network using their own user account and applying policies based on user groups but I don't think this method would work with all devices, would it? (Devices like smart TV's and bluray players, for example.)

I'm curious how everyone else is handling similar situations.
