PPPoE and IPv6

Now this is most annoying, have been testing the XG firewall product which I'm now quite liking and getting used to the interface, having come from the UTM.

BUT...

One thing that has just stopped me from deploying the device to 38 branch offices is the ability to use PPPoE to communicate by IPv6 - several of the offices I have use IPv6 to communicate between each other.

Is this a feature that's coming in a later release, or something that will never be implemented?

  • Try using IPv6 as a DHCP and see if you get an assigned external address, otherwise as you have noted the XG does not even come close to the UTM for IPv6 functionality.

I have a home UTM in front of my home XG to test and use IPv6.

  • I did try that, and it gets no IP address what-so-ever..

So I guess this can be added to the list of features yet to be implemented...

  • You did keep IPv4 as PPPOe and IPv6 as DHCP?

Feature request, don't hold your breathe.

Also, don't forget IPv6 is a seperate firewall in XG, not integrated as per UTM. You need to do whatever you have done in IPv4 and duplicate it in IPv6, so your device can end up with 4 identities.

  • I had both IPv4 and IPv6 in the interfaces ticked - just now looked again and have noticed that PPPoE only shows under the IPv4 area.

I'll raise a feature request - hadn't thought of that!!  But guessing they don't always get implemented, despite it being something useful.
