[Fresh From the Press: Latest KB's] Sophos XG Firewall: Performance testing methodology

This KB article links to a document describing Sophos datasheet performance testing methodology.

During performance testing, it is important to point out that the application or protocol used for testing will have an impact on the actual throughput especially over a WAN or a VPN link.

As an example, when moving data over a VPN using some of the most common applications categorized from the slowest to the fastest as following:

1. SCP/SSH
2. SMBv1
3. RDP copy/paste
4. SMBv2
5. FTP
6. HTTP

Of course, the mileage on these applications may vary slightly depending on the configuration and/or resources.

Also, application performance over a VPN on the Internet, varies versus local clients/servers on the LAN. For example, 1 Gbps over LAN is not the same as 1 Gbps over the Internet.
