Wan interface cannot get IP from ISP

Hi , I using XG in router mode (VM) and the wan port cannot get the IP from ISP

I tried to change the MAC address still not work.

I need to assign a static IP on WAN port.

Can someone help me to trouble shoot the problem?

  • Hi rfcat_vk,

i have installed Sophos XG on a mini pc. im connecting isp lan cable to WAN port of Sophos

have configured static ip on Sophos XG, but unable ping it

have disabled DHCP server on ISP modem / router

only option to access Sophos GUI is if i connect laptop to wan port of mini pc

not sure if some kind of double nating is happening

    appreciate your help

  • Hi,

sounds like either the NIC driver on the VM is wrong or the internal NIC (XG) is not connected to the physical NIC of the VM. What does the VM console show for connections?

  • Hi Ian,

Apologies for delayed response. I'm not using any VM.

Have installed Sophos XG on a mini PC that has four N/W ports

I'm wanting to know on how i can connect ISP Modem/Router to Sophos XG.

When i connect ISP to WAN port on Mini PC , i dont get any WAN IP

I logged into GUI using 172.16.16.16 and set static WAN IP for Sophos as 192.168.1.150 , with Gateway as 192.168.1.1 ( same as ISP )

But im unable to ping 192.168.1.150 from the same subnet.

Also Sophos does not have access to Internet

    Hope im making any sense

    Appreciate any help mate

    Thanks

  • Hi Ruka,

sorry, I thought I was replying to the post about using a VM.

    Some basic steps to check,

1/. move the WAN cable between ports, wait about 1 minute to see if that port shows a connection

2/. check that all the ports are set to auto negotiate 1000mb/s

    3/. check you WAN cable

4/. did you setup the XG in router mode rather than bridge mode, router mode is easier to work with for most home setups.

The XG will not have access to the internet until you find which port is alive other than your LAN port.

  • Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply ,looks like you are online now

    1. Please advise on how i check if there is a connection when moving between ports

    2.  How do i check the speed on ports

    3. you mean the condition of the cable, its pretty good condition

    4. Bridge mode worked for me and i was able to configure certain things, but since it doesn't not VPN , im wanting to configure router mode for study purpose

    Thanks

  • Hi Ian,

i can confirm all ports are on auto negotiate

im currently logged into sophos with laptop connected to WAN port , using static IP 172.16.16.17 on laptop

  • Morning Ian,

Looks like you were right, i got confused with the Ports. Have connected cable from ISP to Mini PC's LAN port ( which was Port 2 ) , and i was trying to access the GUI from Port 1 :(

Your advise to check active Network ports is what rang a bell for me.

    Once again appreciate your help

Also the response from Sophos Community is really awesome , especially for beginners like me

    Have a good day

    Cheers
