Unable to get IPV6 Router Advertisement not working

Hi Everyone, I have been trying to get IPV6 Router Advertisements to work but unable to receive a default gateway. I'm currently getting an IPV6 address from the DHCP Server, but just not receiving the gateway through RA. I have tried multiple settings in RA with prefix and without but no luck. Can anyone shed any light on what I could be doing wrong?

  • Hi,

very easy. RA only works on the internal side. If your ISP is providing IPv6 via DHCP you should be receiving and FE80 in th every least as a gateway. When you try to use RA your choice of networks is only the internal one.

  • Hi sorry don't think I explained that very well. Basically I have vlans on the lan side of the Sophos XG. I have been given a /48 from the isp and broken that up in to /64's. I have assigned address to the inside interfaces on the Sophos XG. I have added the prefix in to RA for the interface. But on my laptop I only receive an ipv6 address from my Windows DHCP server no Default Gateway from RA.

  • Okay,

Have you created a DHCP IPv6 server on the XG? Please remember the XG IPv6 is very basic and does not have all the features of the IP4. IPv6 and IP4 are treated as two seperate firewalls in the XG.

With your RA configuration you will end up with multiple IPv6 addresses assigned to your laptop.

Update:- just tried your configuration on my XG but with the DHCP box not ticked. I received a gateway and two IPv6 addresses.

  • I have created the DHCP on the Sophos. My laptop gets ip from the Sophos but for a strange reason cannot get a default gateway.

    Thanks Mark

  • Sorry Ian, which DHCP box the managed flag and other flag?

  • Hi Mark,

depends on really what you are trying to achieve?

The DHCP manage (DHCP6) flags and the assign gateway flags. I untick the to boxes in the RA so I only get 1 IPv6 address assigned to each device I also get an FE80 gateway assigned, but require a restart (MAC Book Pro) to get the corrected assignments.

I have not been able to get IPv6 to work very well with the XG, could be because I have two ISPs and only one supports IPv6. I put rules in place to force all IPv6 traffic on to the IPv6 gateway, but does not work very well. I have deleted all my IPv6 configuration for the moment until I get the "NBN" with better performance. I never had any of these issues while using the UTM and IPv6.

Hey, just looked at your DHCP setting, why did you add so many ffff to it, af would have been plenty (over 100 addresses)?

  • Hi Ian,

I'm up and running now, issue seems to be over wifi. Plugged into switch into same vlan as wireless and get default gateway straight away. Think I need to look at the access point. Appreciate your help this late at night.

    Thanks Again Mark

  • Hi Mark,

mid morning here. Pleasure to be of some assistance. Depends on whether you are using a Sophos AP or just and AP? Sophos APs and IPv6 another interesting discussion. APs do not appear to get an IPv6 address, the MACs gets IPv6 address over the AP but it does not show in the wireless connection list.

This might affect you and might not, I find the IPv6 functions in the XG very flaky, if my ISP link fails the IPv6 does not work correctly until I resave the interface.

  • Hi Ian,

Glad i'm not keeping you awake :) It's just a tp-link AP connected to a Cisco 2960s via a trunk so nothing fancy. Its so stange that it picks up an ipv6 address but just not the RA. But as soon as I go wired in to the switch on the same vlan as the wireless it works first time. I have to admit I have found it a bit flaky but hopefully it will get better in future updates up to the utm standard.

    Thanks Mark
