Business Rule Template Questions

Can someone take a moment and explain a couple of things on Business Rules and their associated Templates? These seem like such simple things that I just can seem to find.

First, how can you tell what template was used for an existing business rule?  The "Auto added firewall policy for MTA" that is created by default probably touches SMTP... but how the heck can you tell? If you open the rule to edit, there is NOTHING there that tells you what services it affects. What am I missing?

As a followup, where do the templates live for these business rules? If I want to edit or create new ones... where do I go? I've poked every corner XG I can think of but can't seem to find them! The "Protection Policies" under "Web Server" seems to be part of the template list, but not all of it?!?

Finally, if the template a business rule was built from changes, does the rule change? Or is the rule disconnected from the underlying template?

Thanks in advance for any information.

  • Hey

Please note our SFOS help page for the full explanation and description of Business Rules and individual templates.

Most of the business rules will have a description automatically added upon creation for easier identification. Other business rule templates (Exchange,OWA) will have the path-specific routing automatically filled in by default. As for the auto added firewall policy for MTA, this rule is created as an Any>Any that has scanning for SMTP and SMTPS enabled.

These business-application templates are created by our developers. Unfortunately there is no current feature to edit or add custom templates, however most (if not all) setups are able to be configured from the existing templates or by modifying the rules after creation.

If a business rule template were to be changed in a future release, your existing rules should still remain the same after you upgrade.

I realized something today that cleared things up for me. I believe my confusion was caused by thinking of the business rules as fundamentally inbound server/service rules. Because of that, I had a misunderstanding of what the default MTA rule was. I assumed (incorrectly) that it should have a services pick-list. When I opened that rule and did not see a services pick-list, I assumed (again incorrectly) that the services were being picked up from some underlying MTA template.

After playing with this a bit, it dawned on me that what you see when you edit this rule is all that there is to it... nothing more, nothing less.

So, it all makes sense now.

    Thanks again,

    Gary
