Sophos XG Home Edition installs as an appliance on my PC

All,

I have something weird that is happening when attempting to re-image my PC using SW-SFOS_17.0.5_MR-5-162. It is now recognizing my PC as an appliance and installs the following:

SF01V (SFOS 17.0.5 MR-5) instead of SFVH (SFOS 17.0.5 MR-5). This would be fine except when installed as an appliance it doesn't allow me to restore my configuration from my backup prior to re-imaging.

I don't mind running it as an appliance i just don't want to configure all the rules again....

Any and all ideas are greatly appreciate.

  • Hi,

please expand your issue. Are you trying to install this on a working PC as a KVM or is the PC an XG only?

My XG reports it is an appliance but with SFVH.

  • I am trying to install it on my PC with XG only. I was having issues with the firewall freezing so i decided to re-install the firewall on the same PC. Except this time when I install it. It installs this version SF01V (SFOS 17.0.5 MR-5) instead of SFVH (SFOS 17.0.5 MR-5) which is what was previously installed.

The difference in versions do not allow me to restore from my backup. If their is a way for me to restore my config then I personally do not care what version of the firewall it installs.

So if anyone knows of a way to utilize the restore feature with different version i'm open to try it.

    Thanks All,

  • Hi,

I don't think there is from reading other threads on similar lines. The appliance configuration has hard information included which the software version does not.

The installation seems very strange to me that you have been able to install the software version on a non appliance machine that thinks it is an appliance. The installation should have failed because of a missing information from the disk.

You have been able register and synchronise it successfully?

    Ian

  • Ian,

I completely agree with you. And yes I am able to register and synchronize using my original licensing information. It is very weird why now it's recognizing my PC as an appliance. If it will function properly I will just run it as is and re-configure my firewall. However, I was looking to avoid having to reconfigure which is why i took the backups.

However, the good thing about it recognizing my PC as an appliance is that it will utilize all the memory i have and not just cap out at 6gigs.

Nevertheless, I was hoping to be able to restore the firewall. I'm guessing their is also no way of manually forcing the installation to install as a software installation and not hardware?

    Thanks for all responses.

  • Hi Bobby,

if you are running a home user licence you will be restricted to 6gb of RAM regardless of the device you run on.

As far as restoring backup goes, there was some suggestions that exporting the configuration in XML format and editing it might work, but in your case no.

  • Hi Bobby ,

I it is possible that the port affiliation could be different,  You could create a Configuration file by selective backup or simply re-install with the correct installer.

  • when you say simply re-install with the correct installer what exactly do you mean? I've downloaded the following from the link provided for sophos home firewall.

I'm installing the software firewall OS using the following file: SW-SFOS_17.0.5_MR-5-162

    Thanks for all responses.

  • I might be having a related "failed install" with the same SW-SFOS_17.0.5_MR-5-162.

My hardware is a Supermicro X7SPA-HF (Atom D510). The Sophos FIRMWARE INSTALLER reports

Created on: #Thu Jan 25 xxx

    Firmware version: #17.0.5.162

    Contains Firmware for: SF01V_SO01

    =======================

Using Disk /dev/sda: 596GB as Primary Disk

    Detected Appliance Model: SF01V_SO01

    Continue (y/n)

Installation starts but after a few minutes fails with

Formatting Configuration Partition   losetup: invalid number '/conf'

    sh: 0: unknown operand

.ERROR: failed to create default 1024

    Error configuring partitions

    Aborting

Would I conclude that my failing install is due to the iso trying to install an appliance version of the firmware not the software version of the firmware, and is therefore failing due to missing/wrong hardware/drivers?

I would like to try an earlier installer .iso, but having spent hours on a merry-go-round with sophos chat and web support, they don't actually read or understand or solve the issue. They have a canned selection of answers and links, nothing more than "how to create a USB bootabe" to "how to re-image" but ALWAYS linking back to that same .iso.  Seems impossible to get hold of an older version that doesnt have this hardware ID false detection.

  • I feel better knowing that I am not going insane. I am installing to the same PC and nothing changed except now the software installer is installing as hardware. So to debunk a theory about my PC changing.  I was able to install a previous version SW-SFMOS_15.01.0_MR-3-447 and you guessed it. It installed properly as a software based firewall running on my PC.

So i'm concluding that something has definitely changed within the .iso file.

support has requested i try installing with virtualization disabled in the bios. Im goin to try that shortly & report back with an update.
