Help to configure PPPOE with Sunrise(switzerland)

Hello Everyone,

I struggle to configure a Sophos XG (XG85W) with a PPPOE connection. (sophos XG85W is already used with the old copper connection and registered).

I received a Zyxel (Zyxel FMG3025) with the new fiber connection.

PPPOE connection is OK. I tested it directly with my laptop using the Zyxel in routing mode.

Confirmation receveived from the Sunrise Tech. I have to use Vlan configuration with priority 3 and ID 11 and nat enable.

I want to set it in bridge mode and do the pppoe Connection via the Sophos.

Searching the web I found this information with the vlan configuration on the Zyxel in bridge mode

Searching the forum I found opposite info. Vlan must be configured on the Zyxel and not on sophos or vlan must be configured directly on sophos and not on Zyxel.

Clarification would be great on this point.

Further help to configure properly the pppoe on the sophos would be much appreciated.

I don't have access to the Firewall right now and I posted the details based on my memories.

******************************
Info povided by sunrise are quite thin and they refuse to help with the sophos. They provide only help on devices provided by them and they didn't even try to help with the sophos.

  • David,

VLAN cannot be configured on XG bridge. Only the native VLAN can be changed using console command (system vlan-tag set interface bridgename). So, you have 2 options, use another modem and then use XG as bridge, or use XG in routing mode (no bridge) and activate PPPOE on the WAN interface.

  • Hello lferrara,

Firstly, thank you taking time to respond. Sorry the question was misleading. I'll try to be more precise.

I set the Zyxel in bridge mode, teaming the WAN interface with one of the LAN interface so I can use the other interfaces to manage the zyxel if needed.

I plugged my XG via the WAN interface on the teamed LAN interface of the Zyxel. If not mistaken the XG was already in routing mode as you advised me.

After that, I tried to establish the PPPOE connection directly on the Sophos via the WAN interface. On the status screen of the Sophos I see a red dot on the WAN interface saying the connexion is not established or something like that (I also tried without teaming WAN/LAN on the Zyxel and I got the same results in the XG)

    1) do I have to configure the Zyxel with the VLAN Options as showed in the print screen of the Zyxel on first post ?

    2) Do I have to do the configuration with VLAN 3/11 directly on the sophos as you suggested in your response ? and if so I guess I don't do it on the ZyHoxel ? I'm not sure to know how to apply such settings on the WAN interface of the Sophos.

I hope you will see the message and you will respond as well.

Thanks in advance for your kind help.

    Cheers

    Davi
