Google images forces usage rights "Labeled for reuse with modification"

We are new to Sophos XG, running an XG450 on SFOS 17.0.5 MR-5.

We have "Enable SafeSearch" enabled, but this is also having the unintended consequence of also forcing the Usage Rights setting to "Labeled for reuse with modification".

We are a school so we would like to be able to change this setting to one of the "Labeled for noncommercial reuse" settings. We cannot currently do this without disabling the global "Enable SafeSearch" option, which as as school is something that we just cannot do.

Does anyone know if this is currently possible?

If not Sophos really needs to implement more granular configuration over these "SafeSearch" settings as in their current form they are woefully inadequate for a "Next Generation Firewall"

  • In Web, Protection tab, Search Engine Enforcement.

If "Enforce additional image filters" is Off, then we don't enforce any usage rights filter.  You should be able to modify the setting as you want, but there is not enforcement across all users.

If "Enforce additional image filters" is On, then we enforce the lowest setting for the usage rights filter - "Labeled for reuse with modification".

The main reason for this feature is that we have found the lowest setting gets rid of the majority of photos from phones and personal cameras, while allowing anything official such as from a news source.  This in turns cuts down on the number of "racy but not explicit" photos.

I don't know of any normal use case where you would want something more strict as a cross-the-board enforcement.  Typically the more strict settings are used by people who are looking specifically for things like clip art they can legally reuse.

I just did a quick test by searching for "girls".  With no usage rights, there are a few racy pictures.  With the lowest "Label for reuse with modification" setting, there were fewer racy pictures.  With every other setting in usage rights, the images returned were pretty much the same.  So stricter rights did not remove any additional offensive pictures.

I believe the plan is that in 17.2 (or maybe .3 I'm not sure) we will allow per-policy configuration of the SafeSearch and Image Filters, which would allow you to configure certain users with no image filter enforcement so that you can do the stricter ones if you want.

  • Thanks Michael.

    That has worked for us.

Will there be more granularity regarding the SafeSearch or Image filters in 17.2/17.3?

Having recently migrated from UTM 9.506-2 we are used to seeing the options for individual search engines and which to enable SafeSearch on. With the issues we have also experienced using YouTube and the SafeSearch option enforcing restricted mode to all users it is important that each discrete platform is configurable by the XG admins.

Also, if the XG has the capability to enforce image rights restrictions, it would be ideal if all the Usage Rights/Licence options available on the search engine were available for organisations to choose the best fit for them.

  • AFAIK the plan is to separate YouTube to its own checkbox, and to make it configurable per policy.  There is no plan to have more image license filtering options or to separate the three search engines we support (Bing. Yahoo, Google).

BTW, the Image license filter also applies to Bing, where the license options are different.
