Lost Lan Adapter after BIOS Microcode Update

I have a Supermricro Atom 275 Baord with 4 Lan Adapter and an extra Intel 4 Port Card which ran fine untill today.

After a BIOS Update the last 4 Port which are on the extra card are marked with N/A in the the XG Port view

The card itself works, which means it shows the LED aktive but not blinking.

So to me it seams that XG forgot the card to initiate.

My problem is that I can log into console but not trough the VGA/Keyboard because its not recognising any keyboard input, so i cant login with password.

I did reset the BIOS to factory defaults but I did not wnet back, also I didn not test the Card on another PC, but i am sure its working.

Whyt can I do to make the card working again?

  • Hi,

have you tried removing the power from the box for a couple of minutes then trying to connect again?

Further try resetting the bios via the motherboard reset by removing the bios battery or shorting the appropriate pins.

  • Yes, also a full BIOS reset inkl. plug off, battery off and shorting the reset pins.

  • Hi DAENG,

when in the bios does it show the PCI slot being occupied. I expect you have tried to ensure the NIC card is correctly seated in the slot? You might need to do a re-installation of the XG. Do you have a backup of the existing configuration, before bios update?

  • There is no option in the BIOS to see if a slot is occupied, but i beleiv there was a boot rom option from this card while startup.

I have no backup from before, I always thought that XG is keeping at least a few backups, but it seams that its only keeping the last.

But there must be a way to check somehow if a card need driver or so or is active but driverles etc.?

Also it really wonders me why i have no keyboard controll to typ in password directly into console on VGA???

Its simply doing nothing the same keyboard works on DOS (boot from stick) or in BIOS.

I switched a Plugs and even tried another, nothing...

  • Hi,

sorry,, I can't help any further, I have run out of ideas, other than maybe a re-installation is required.

  • Do ansere my own question:

afer a week searching and testing i simply boght another board, to have a spare part later on.

    So the way is:

    -install a fresh machine

    -backup you old machine

    -restore your backup

As soon I take out the old machine with works with 4 ports only sonce the i will try to fix and will report if i can find it out.

  • So today i had time to check the broken device and as i guessed in the shell screen it only showes 4 ports instead of 8.

The card which is missing is working properly, the one which is sitting in there is the one that worked in the new machine.

So that means that XG is not boot it up properly, so there must me some software driver conflict or so.

Is there no command to rescan hardware or "update" driver etc.?

Sorry for bothering you, but in my case the whole process took a week.

Ok, now I we reinstall this one and i guess afterwards i have a spare working machines if the other fails, but I actually like to find problems and solve them directly, instead of redoing things.

Of cause I am actuayll happy that only the last 4 Ports failed because this showed me how important it is to have a spare unit to exchange if the working one passes away.

    Thanx!

  • Hi,

I am sorry, but I can't help you there. I can't remeber whether you checked for a bios update to the LAN card. You might need to put the device into another PC to perform a firmware upgrade to it.

  • It was the mainboard that got the BIOS update.

    But the story continues.

Now I got a new mainboard and new 4 Port LAN card and set up a fresh XG install, after that I copied the settings from the old machine.

So, the 4 ports of the extra are active and show connected but no traffic on non of the ports, the light on the cards are blinking though.

  • Hi,

when you login to the console and check the network connections what does it show?

    Ian

  • It shows connected on all 4 Ports. I copied a firewall rule and delted the old one, but no change.

Here is on full example of one Port:

    Port6
    LAN

    Physical
    Connected
    1000 Mbps - Full Duplex
    Auto-negotiated
    192.168.4.1/255.255.255.0
