How do you connect to Sophos AP 55? Through wpa2 password or Sophos XG Firewall User Login?

Good day to all,

Please excuse me for this noob question. I need clarification about how user authentication works in Sophos Access Points. I am eyeing Sophos AP 55 for home use, but I don't know if the AP 55 can do what I need. What I am looking for right now is seamless authentication. I want to connect to the access point and network using my Sophos XG user credentials instead of connecting to the access point by using wpa2 password and then logging in to the network using Sophos XG credentials. Does Sophos AP 55 and Sophos XG integrates user authentication seamlessly? Do you connect to the AP 55 using a login portal?

I don't like wpa2, because when neighbors know your password, it sucks.

  • Thanks for the reply. I thought the main purpose of the Sophos APs are for integrated user authentication. So you mean I still need a wpa2 password in order to connect to the Sophos AP 55 before a I can login to the Sophos captive portal?

And if ever I really need to use a radius server, does Sophos XG have a built in Radius server that can use the Sophos XG's local users login credentials?

We all know that setting up a radius server is a torment. Not worth it for home use. So, the separate radius setup path is not an option for me at this point.

  • Hi John,

Please remember this is an enterprise security device, so the main security settings are around the enterprise access processes. If you can't use radius or AD authentication (which would be via radius server in the AD) then you need to use WPA2/AES before your users can connect to the AP, otherwise your AP is open to all comers.

  • I guess I have to set up a radius authentication server then. I thought it's automatically set when I plug the AP55 to the XG Firewall.
