Access to cable modem not working any more

Hi together,

since MR3 (I hope this is correct) I cannot access my management interface of my cable modem anymore:

The modem is in bridge mode in order to get the WAN IP with DHCP directly on my XG.

Additionally the modem's web interface is accessible over 192.168.100.1 on my WAN port. This was working in the past and stopped after MR3 or so.

Now the browser is loading for a long time and displays a Sophos error page "Website not available" with reason "We found the website's address but were unable to connect to the web server." afterwards. A telnet on port 80 directly in the advanced shell of the XG isn't working as well.

I cannot get any information from the log viewer and PCAP about this issue. A FW rule on top without any protection doesn't help either.

Thanks and best regards

Dom Nik

  • Hi all,

I have solved the problem with the help of Casual_User's post in this thread: https://community.sophos.com/products/xg-firewall/f/network-and-routing/99751/what-is-my-modems-ip

"It will likely be on a different subnet.  To access it from your network you'll need to add an alias for your WAN port that is the same subnet as your modem.  You can do that here:
Configure -> Interfaces -> Add Interface -> Add Alias "select the external WAN port""

So basically Ina gave the right answer but I didn't know how to do it. :-)

My modem has the IP 192.168.100.1, so the alias must be on the WAN port with IP/netmask, e.g. 192.168.100.10/24 .

    Best Regards

I was having the same issue and this appears to have fixed it. However, I don't quite understand why and if anyone would be able to explain, that would be much appreciated.

The part I don't understand is if I restart the Sophos XG device, I'm able to access my cable modem (192.168.100.1) with no issue. However, at some point (approximately between 4-8 hours), I can no longer access it as I get the Sophos XG error page saying the website is not available

However, if I add the alias to my Port 2 (WAN port) of 192.168.100.10, I'm now able to access the cable modem at 192.168.100.1. So the two questions I have:

    1) How come I'm able to access it without the alias for several hours after restarting the Sophos XG device?

    2) How come adding the alias of 192.168.100.10 to my Port 2 (WAN) allows me to access the cable modem on 192.168.100.1?

    Thanks.
