Managed IOS Apps

we have a number of apps installed via SMC and our VPP account, they are installed as managed and are removed with MDM profile removal, is there any way to stop the removal when unrolled of the profile is removed?

we need to un-enroll and large number of devices and it will be a big headache if the apps are also removed as many have configuration that connect to external servers and the configuration cannot be automatically re-added.

on the IOS apps i have deselected "SMC managed installation" check box but this appears to have no effect. the attached image is not an example of the installed apps that we dont want to remove, its merely showing the checks for managed and remove with profile removal.

  • i thought you had saved the day then, just tested this.

i removed the check box on the iOS app for "SMC managed installation", just enrolled a new device and the VPP apps installed via compliance rule and task bundle, unfortunately it still says "remove with MDM Profile" on each installed app.

what actually does "SMC managed installation" check box do? it appears its just a dumb check box.

  • Hi Andrew,

    my mistake, sorry... TGIF.

The "SMC managed installation" flag is only taken into consideration if a users install an app via the Enterprise App Store within the SMC app.
When trigger the installation of an app via the SMC server, it will be always installed as a "Managed" app.

This is also described here in the manual
Note: The SMC managed installation setting only affects apps that are installed by the user from the Enterprise App Store. Apps that you install from the Sophos Mobile Control console are always managed.

Additional information is available in the "Managed apps for iOS" chapter.

    Best regards
