Will it ever be possible to select / assign VPP licenses from the device view?

Since it is possible to assign VPP licenses to a device and not to a user it would be great to be able to assign the licenses out of the device view, or assign licenses to a device group, or have a default list of automatically assigned VPP licenses.
The only way now is to go to each single app an assign a new device manually. With a large number of apps this is hard way...

Is this on the road map? Or what is the best way to handle this?

  • Yes, there are a lot of things to improve handling a lot of apps or devices. Automated assigning of licenses would be on my wishlist too. A good way to motivate the developers is to use the feature request form:

But I think that your question concerning a road map should be answered, maybe in a webcast. I hope that sophos will become more administration-oriented which means that jobs that have to be done for a lot of apps or devices can be handled in a senseful way.

  • Hi All,

it is currently planned to create a patch which will improve the DEP enrollment, the VPP license assignment and also contains some bug fixes.

With the introduced change, a VPP license can be automatically assigned to the device or VPP user if an installation task of a VPP app is sent to a device.
You can decide whether you want to assign the license on a user basis or a device basis. This will be an additional option within the VPP tab.

This will also resolve the issue discussed in this thread regarding the SMC client installation and activation.

The patch should be become available within the next few weeks.

  • Hi,

installed the patch 6.1.11 today and checked the setting "Automatically assign VPP apps on installation" and set it to "Preferably to device". I purchased a new app via Apple VPP and configured it to "SMC managed installation" and didn't assign a license to a device or user.

Now I installed the app on my iPad (triggered installation from SMC app). The installation process started and asked for my apple-id! I aborted the installation, because we have some users without an apple-id. Looking into the app section on SMC now showed me that a license was assigned to my iPad. Now I triggered the installation of the app once again. This time the app was installed without prompting for an appel-id.

Automatically assigning a managed app should work without asking for the apple-id from the beginning.

After deleting the app from the device the license stays assigned to the device. It would be nice if the license could be unassigned automatically, too...

    Kind regards

    Dirk

  • Hi Dirk,

    sorry for the late reply.
Our developers have discovered a timing issue regarding DEP which did not occur in our tests.
I hope to get an answer soon when and how we plan to fix it.

    Sorry for the delay...

    Best regards

  • Hello,

I am also getting the same issue, where i cannot assign apps purchased through VPP to a device, without the device prompting me for an Apple ID.

I have followed all of the steps outlined in a guide.

The app installation in SMC fails with this:
