iOS and SMC 6: Hiding Apps in managed/supervised devices

Hi there,

I defined an app-group with some apps in it (calendar, contacts, maps, ...) which I want to hide on my supervised Devices. Then I added this group in the compliance rule (default) under "Not allowed apps". My test-iPad is in sync but the apps are still visible on the iPad.

What do I have to do under iOS to hide apps on supervised devices?

Cheers

  • Hi Detlef,

as far as I know, there is currently functionality within iOS 9.2 to hide applications. This will be possible with iOS 9.3 if I am correctly informed. You can only hide the built-in apps which are configurable via the "Restrictions" profile (AppStore, Camera, Facetime).
The "Now allowed apps" is only used for compliance displaying an information on the devices that these apps are not allowed according to your compliance rules and users would have to uninstall these apps which does not work in your case.

    Best regards

  • Can we hope to get this feature in SMC 6.1 when iOS 9.3 is out? That will be a very useful feature to hide all the stuff from supervised iPads that's not needed (from the view of an admin). An iPad with just the one or two needed apps on it, configured by SMC, that would be charming :-).

    Cheers

  • Apple do not provide a way to manage applications that way,

The closest I could find would be to create a custom profile for "Home Screen Layout Payload" and place the Apps you do not want in a folder.

  • Hi Detlef,

    an update on this topic.

You could hide the apps on supervised devices by using a restriction profile.
Within this profile, define your app list as "Forbidden Apps" within the "Application" section.

After applying the profile, the configured apps should disappear from your device.

There is no solution for non-supervised devices.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards
    Stefan

  • I have been looking for a way to disable many of the apps on the iPad and seen your response. I'm not sure I follow how to do this.

could you give a little more process information?

I made a restriction profile to not allow but the apps still show. Show Apple Music needs to be turned off or disable so it cannot be turned on.
