SMC 6: Auto-enrolled iPads and Control App

Last posting this year:

My iPads get the auto-enrollment-Link from the Apple configurator 2. Then after 4-5 times tipping on the touch-screen (next, next, yes, confirm, ... boring stuff) and the final "here we go" the iPads are in the SMC (with those weird naming convention iPad5,3 DAVCDEGGGVJ). I made a compliance-rule to install the Control-App when it's not installed. Works fine, Control-App ("bought" via VPP) comes to the iPad and asks whether it's allowed to send sounds and so on, the usual stuff. When I open the app, it crashes.
BUT: when I do not install the control-app via the compliance-policy but with the same task-bundle assigned to that iPad, everything is fine, control-app does not crash and can be opened.

The control-app comes from the app-store via VPP.

Merry X-mas and a happy new year

I have the same problem. I activated "install smc app" in my device-group and the control-app crashed and can't be opened.
I deactivated the function "install smc app" and created a task to install the control-app if it is not installed (required apps - compliance rule) but it doesn't work (entgültig fehlgeschlagen).

Do you have a idea what I can do?
  • Hi Hermann,
my problem was that I installed an outdated ipa-File hosted on my SMC-Server. The most actual version of the control app in the app-store is important so you should be sure to use that version. That solved my Problem and hopefully yours too.

  • Must the control-app be an iOS link or iOS package? or it doesn't matter?
I can activate "install smc app" but not where from.
  • I "bought" the control-app with my Volume Purchase Program-Account (which is mandatory for Apple Configurator 2 in my setup). Then I created a task to install this app from the appstore. My VPP-Account is connected to the SMC and at least that scenario works fine now.
  • My idea was, I "supervise" the iphone with apple configurator 2. Then the control app will be installed automatically and is registered too (provisioned).

"Then I created a task to install this app from the appstore."
Do you mean you start a install task from the SMC manual? or it happens automatically from compliance rules? because when the install starts from compliance rule it doesn't work. I get the message failed.
  • That's what I do with about 180 iPads. Supervision-Mode with Apple Configurator 2 and the rest including the installation of the SMC-control-app via a Task triggered by a compliance rule. Working fine now. The only thing is that the control-app has to be configured after installation. I do it via mail and so I have to touch 180 iPads for that job. I wish Sophos would find an automated way here too to configure the control-app in a more convenient (hands-free) way.

  • "Supervision-Mode with Apple Configurator 2 and the rest including the installation of the SMC-control-app via a Task triggered by a compliance rule."

-> Unfortunately it doesn't work by me. the triggered task starts but failes.
I have to start a install task for the control app -> then assign it a user to get the qr code -> then assign it to the particular user who get it later -> then start a next task to push all profiles...

    "...I do it via mail..."

-> You assigned all 180 iPads an special user to get the configuration email with qr code? after that you assigned it to the particular user?
  • All 180 iPads are assigned to one User. After the iPads are attached to the SMC I push the button on "reconfigure smc-app" for 30 iPads (one Tablet-Cart) and I receive all mails on all iPads. And then "click, click, click, yes, yes, click". Several clicks per iPad, not really what I call smooth.
  • Correction: triggering the Install-task as a compliance rule fails. There were too many changes in my setup in the last weeks due to SMC6. As far as I know the failing task is a problem of iOS 9.2 and will be solved hopefully soon withe iOS 9.2.1.
