ESC 10.3 - Can't Configure Scanning (W8.1Upd)...All greyed-out.

Hi,

I'm using ESC 10.3 on a Windows 8.1 Update laptop.  I'm logged-on as a "local administrator".

Most of the options under "Configure" are "greyed-out".  I've been unable to discover on my own or thru Internet searches how to remedy this.

I'd like access to all "Configure" options.  I have this in my Windows 7 x64 desktop.  I'd just add my account to the local Sophos Administrators group.  I haven't been able to solve this riddle for my W8.1 Update laptop.


Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello BlairAllen,

    if under Configure and in the Tamper protection section on the home screen Authenticate user is active then a Tamper Protection password has been set. If this is the case then likely whoever provided the installation (and possibly manages it) has decided to do so.

    Appreciate you taking the time to reply!

    First, yes "Tamper Protection & "Authenticate User" are greyed-out. The only visible choice to be made under "Configure" is "Anti-Virus/Rt. Click Scanning" & "Updating".

    But I installed Sophos which I do on a daily basis (IT Support - College campus). There was no difference in the installation prompts whether installing on W7x64 or our 1st W8.1 laptop. There was no prompt regarding any type of setting a password. Same setup procedure on both OS'es, "Run as adminstrator" on ".exe", supply Sophos username/password (using Sophos servers as primary, no secondary used), installation completes. Install is receiving updates as necessary.

    As stated, our 1st W8.1 install. OS/drivers installed, Sophos AV next, machine not on a domain thus GPO's/etc. not involved. W7 all options available once user account is added to "Sophos Administrators", W8, all greyed-out with exceptions noted above and no way obvious to us, of adding a user to a Sophos Administrator group.

    What's funny is as I googled "Sophos 10.3 can't configure scanning", my search engine's "suggestions" dropped down the above search terms before I even completed typing leading me to believe others have been having the same issue. Sad to say, the search results didn't come close to addressing this issue, so I reverted to this forum.

    I should add that my "Configuration" options haven't always been "greyed-out". About 3 months ago I had to disable Sophos and my options were all available.

    I don't normally have a need to control Sophos, it just runs in the background so I don't know the exact time-frame when they became "greyed-out". How I discovered it, was when I went to do a W10 upgrade and with it's large size file, I went to disable Sophos, something I've done in the past only when accessing "Windows Update".

    I'm wondering if a recent Sophos upgrade/update has something to do with the issue. I see recent activity in C:\Windows\Temp via Sophos log files but not knowing when I lost functionality, there are too many to go thru.

    Now I'm really confused. Thought I'd uninstall/reinstall and watch my log files to monitor any changes to the "Configure" options.

    When I tried to uninstall, I receive a dialog box stating;

    "Error 3005. SAV can only be uninstalled by users that are members of the Sophos/Administrator user group".

    Where is this Sophos Administrator group on W8.1update?

    sorry for the delayed reply (still struggling with getting used to the navigation in the new Community). The greyed links are indeed what a member of the SophosUser local group would see (that's why I asked what View product information shows). The SophosAdministrator group is a security group which is created and populated with the members of the Administrators group at install time. If you don't see Local Users and Groups in Computer Management then it's a non-pro W8.1 (in which case one would use the net localgroup  command from an elevated cmd shell).

    Appreciate the reply! Didn't see your question regarding product information but "Edition" just says "Windows 8.1". I agree it's a non-Pro version, because as you state, "Computer Management" has no "Users and Groups" listing.

    An inquiry into "net localgroup" (elevated cmd shell) displays;

    "Aliases for \\W8jkd (multiple listings are shown but I see these)
    ----------------------------------
    *Administrators
    *SophosAdministrator
    *SophosOnAccess
    *SophosUser
    *Users

    My account type used is a "local administrator" vs "standard"

    Followed-up on your last comment. Picked-up on the above "Aliases" followed by my computers name, that the listings represented what groups existed on the machine versus my username actually being a member of said groups.

    When I input;

    "net localgroup SophosAdministrator"

    it displayed only "Administrators" & "NT Authority\System"

    Discovered how to add a user to SophosAdministrator and once I added myself, my "Configure" options were all now available.

    I very much appreciate your assistance which led me to this solution.
