Macs failing to update - "Installation Failed"

I have a few Macs which fail to update since some time. All of them running OS X 10.6.8 and the issue apparently started on Aug 11th around noon, Sophos for Mac 9.1.6 [5.04].

The relevant part of the install.log looks like this:

 [:smileytongue: Note: I neither think that has been damanged(sic!) is the actual damage nor that this term is kinda contraction of damaged and mangled) :smileywink:]

Installing from the .mpkg (or the CID) fails likewise as does an attempted removal (Remove Sophos Anti-Virus[360]: [SMERemoveAppDelegate.m:317] The removal tool has been damanged. Removal Failed.). I have a case open but not yet a workable solution. We were able to fix one machine  but only after several attempts to install and uninstall (at one point we deleted the /Library/Application\ Support/opm folder but this alone doesn't seem to solve the issue).

I had one report from an OS X 10.9.4 with similar symptoms but there a reinstall with the .mpkg was sufficient. Anyone seen this?
