Error in enterprise console when attempting to protect computer "account has insufficient rights..."

I successfully installed the trial version of enterprise console on windows 2008 server.

I created a group.

I drag-drop a windows 7 workstation to this new group.

I right clicked the workstation and selected protect computers.

I ented a username/password which exits as an administrator on both the server and the workstation.

After a few seconds, I get the following error:

Account has insufficient rights or simple file sharing enabled. [0x0000003b]

If I hover the mouse pointer over this field, I get a tooltip:

The installation credentials you entered in the "Protect Computers Wizard" are either incorrect or do not give administrator access to the computer over the network. Note that if Windows XP computers have "simple file sharing" enabled, this can prevent full administrator access, which is required for automatic installation.

Both server and workstation have the same identical username/password, which is an administrator account.

Both server and workstation have "use sharing wizard" disabled in folder properties.

Both server and workstation are part of the same workgroup, neither are on a domain.

Any suggestions?

  • Hello Ed_,

looks like the issue is with accessing the workstation, can't say what the specific reason is though. Please see How does the 'Protect computers wizard' perform an installation? on how it's supposed to work and the Sophos endpoint deployment guide for the required settings (but perhaps you've already read them).  Do not forget to check the "type" of network your Win 7 thinks it's connected to (it should not be Public).

  • QC,

Thanks for the info. I think I figured out the problem. I had renamed the admin user account on the Windows 7 workstation. Apparently there is an issue with renaming user accounts.

I discovered the issue when I tried to enable remote desktop on the workstation: system properties, remote tab, click "select users" button, click "add..." button, click "advanced..." button, click "find now".

The search results show the old user account name, not the new name. I renamed the user account back to the original name and its working properly now.
