Is there a conflict with WordPerfect?

On Monday my university installed Sophos Endpoint Security and Control on all computers. Beginning that day my WordPerfect Office X4 began crashing in the middle of a document. I never had that problem before, and I have not had the time to figure out exactly when and under what conditions it occurs. Is this a coincidence or is there some conflict between the two programs?

My university IT wil not give me any help because it doesn't support WordPerfect; I contacted Sophos support and they would not give me any information because I have to ask my university IT; a search of SophosTalk had no information.

Can anybody tell me if there is indeed a conflict, and what can be done about it? Thank you very much.

  • Hello BruceH,

interesting situation - university installs on "your" computer (thus they must have administrative access) while OTOH you are running "unsupported software" (are you Power User or do you have administrative rights?).

Won't criticize you university's IT (being in my university's IT I can imagine the situation) but we support all licensed products (and by all means those we install) - and in this case Sophos belongs to this category (no matter which "other" product is involved). BTW: Did you have AV (from another vendor) before?

That Sophos Support wants to talk only with "site representatives" has a number of reasons. For one thing - in order to collect complete logs you should have (full) administrative rights on the computer. Furthermore changing the settings might be necessary - and even if you can do it, this might conflict with your site's policies and you wouldn't expect Support to suggest this without approval from IT.

I'd check the Windows Event Log for the details of the crash and other errors around this time and whether there are any alerts or errors in the Sophos Anti-Virus log. The next steps depend on your available rights: In the Sophos GUI under Configure -> Anti-Virus ... -> Authorization ... check for programs related to WPO in the Known panes. If this doesn't show anything I'd turn off "everything" in Sophos. Last step would be uninstalling Sophos.

As you see, you'd have to be able to perform all these steps w/o the help of your IT (and then it'd be moot if it really is a coincidence).

Oh - which Sophos version and which OS?

    Christian.
