Problems when I enable Application Control or Device Control

Sophos Endpoint Protection comes with tons of features not found in our AV solutions, however I haven't had much luck with application control, or device control.

I am able to set policies and deploy them. I get good information back, and it blocks access as it should. However, there seems to be a lot of glitchy aspects. One is that when I have device control enabled and set to "Detect but do not block" it still somehow blocks things, such as cd or dvd burning.  I haven't been able to find a good solution for this yet, as I just want to monitor what my users are doing currently without blocking them, but enabling the monitoring seems to block certain functions.

I also have the same type of issue with application control. I will enable it to "detect but allow to run", and it will slow machines down significantly, as well as randomly block some applications.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

  • Hello jdobbins88,

I vaguely remember that if you try to monitor CD/DVD writes (i.e. you set optical to read-only and use detect but do not block) burning could fail. Does it happen only with specific devices (i.e. a certain type or vendor), only on some clients and/or only with certain software? While monitor only is not the primary purpose of Device Control it should nevertheless work as expected - you might need to contact support with this.
