Redirecting Macs to a new management server

Hello all,

virtualizing the few remaining servers I've already set up a new SEC and moved two thirds of the clients there. With Windows this is rather simple and can be done centrally. Saved the Macs for later which is now.

My knowledge was that you have to reprotect the Macs, manually of course. Have done it before and I'm pretty sure that running the install again was all you needed - the Macs picked up the new mrinit.conf and started to talk to the new server. That was before 8.0. This time it seems that RMS does not reinitialize an existing installation. I had to remove SAV for the changes to take effect - installing "over" an existing installation left the old settings intact.

Before calling Support I wanted to check if someone has redirected Macs running SAV 8.0 to a new server and if this was possible without removing first.

TIA

  • Sophos Support have confirmed (#3738667) that prior removal is required - in addition I've been told that this should be the case since 7.x. Found a 7.1 package and it looks like this is indeed the case - might be that I've never done it with 7.x (I did "switch" between the HE and licensed version w/o removal, but that's a different thing).

This of course makes migration a little bit more of a pain due to the extra steps required. There are more questions - whether the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg is more or less version-independent (i.e. whether the latest can be used to remove at least the current major version). If I get a reply from Support soon I'll edit this post.

    Edit

Support recommends using the local package (in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/) adding Other versions might work. But this has never been tested and is unsupported. Was to be expected ...

    /Edit

Nevertheless I think the requirement and instructions should be included in the manual - and ideally there should be a dedicated knowledgebase article (or the existing "Windows-only" one amended).
