Setting up a new server with E.P -how will current clients react ?

HI,

In an attempt to upgrade my E.P. 4.5 to 5.0 (on win2003-R2) , I got nothing but troubles, ending up with the

"Installation of Database32.msi failed with error code: 1603" error.

I already spend quite some time trying to "rescue" the old installation, reading this forum etc.

But I think my current Sophos E.P installation is FUBAR.

If I setup a new Win2008-R2 with the same hostname and IP how will my clients (v.9.7) react to this ?

As I have 40clients I don't mind setting everything up again but  I would like to avoid to install

every client again.

I have a backup of the old 4.5 database, for several reasons I prefer a new start.

  • Hello aandersen,

in order to avoid reprotecting (or reiniting) the clients you should export and import the Certification Manager keys before installing SEC. Please see section 6.1.1 in the Migration Guide (don't worry, it applies also to 4.5) - note the additional \Wow6432Node you have to insert before importing.

There's also How to redirect Windows endpoints to a new management server in case you can't or don't want to use the above method.

You could try to import and upgrade the old database after the fresh install but for 40 clients it is probably not worth the effort.

  • With the same imported certificate (ensure it goes in to the right 32/64-bit path) on the new install and the same IP being used (I assume static), the clients should just report in.  As the ParentAddress value on the clients is correct and the previous certificates they have will be fine as long as you import the cert reg file on the server before installing.

The only think you may need to do is ensure they have the right updating policy in respect to the account being used.  As if you install SEC 5 and choose a new SUM account, they clients may need to this to be able to update.  As soon as you get management of them again though you should be able to push to them a policy.

  • HI,

I just want to thank you , it worked - very easy. :smileyhappy:

What I did - in case anyone else need this.

    1) On my Old win2003 server - exported certificate via Regedit.

    2) Shutdown the Old server

    3) On my new Win2008 (32Bit) server  - imported certificate.

    4) Gave the new server same IP & Hostname

    5) installed Sophos

    (6) Turned on Computer Browser service.

    Thats it!. :-)

    Thank you
