Sophos performance vs competitors

Hi,

We are long time Sophos users and are looking into renewing shortly. As you can imagine, we've been bombarded with sales calls from other vendors so we decided to participate in various Webex demos, etc to see the competition and how it stacks up.

Webroot have sent me the following table which i'm fairly dubious about showing how good their product is over Sophos and Symantec. Can anyone comment on this to whether it is factually correct - all the results seem superior which always rings alarm bells.

  • I guess my first question would be what sort of feature parity are we talking about between these two products and what features do you need?

Data Control / Device Control / AV / Web Control Local / Web Control Gateway / Tamper Protection / Malicious Traffic / Firewall?

Is the Webroot solution just a client to a Cloud web proxy?  The Sophos equivalent would be Cloud Web Gateway - https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/cloud-web-gateway.aspx. This is just a lightweight client that proxies all web traffic through the Cloud.

Install size of 2MB vs 3GB?  For 2MB That can only be either 100% cloud lookups with no local data or it's just a small client to redirect web traffic to the Cloud?

I'm not sure where 3GB comes from for Sophos, a Sophos Cloud endpoint installation to program files is roughly 200MB and then you have all the ProgramData which is around 600MB mainly due to the downloaded/cached file set of AutoUpdate. 800MB to 3GB is a big difference.  I can only think a full Sophos Management Server was referenced.

The install time (5 seconds to 7 minutes) will depend on how it's deployed?  From a local update source or from the Cloud?  Does that time factor in download?  For example, I could download the Cloud installer stub, which then fetches the packages before installing or I could use a full installer, local distribution point in which case the install time would be much lower.  What does this measure?

Memory usage is a very complex subject, the memory counter you use will vary the results wildly. In my experience you can expect the main Sophos endpoint service to use just over 200MB.  Then you have the update service, communication service, tray icon and a few other services depending on features.

Schedule scan time is again very difficult to compare between vendors as are they scanning with the same settings?  Full scan of files, scan all files, root-kit, registry , memory (kernel and user), is this a first scan or second for caching purposes, what exclusions are there, what file types are scanned, is low priority/impact on? etc..

I'm not sure what the file write open close test would even be.

All these sorts of number can be manipulated.  I'd only worry if you can "feel" an issue on a typical computer in your environment as to some degree the impact for you is going to be different from me.

    I hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Jak
