Web control - blocking of facebook.com fails

ggriffiths wrote in this post:

I have configured it to block all of the undesirable categories and this works. I also added exceptions to block 2 domains - twitter.com and facebook.com.

twitter is working great. However with facebook, facebook.com works if you type it excactly like that, but www.facebook.com will display.

I tried adding www.facebook.com as another exception. This seemed to work at first, but does occasionally display the page. we do have a Sophos filtering appliance i am waiting to put in, but am concerned this hit and miss approach will still occur.

While we don't have Web Control licensed I've still the Beta around so I gave it a try. Indeed I could reproduce the described behaviour (on one occasion it even failed to block a different domain I'd added on the block list for testing). There was no obvious anomaly in the data stream returned from facebook so this calls for closer inspection. Therefore I've opened a case (#3215024 in case you want refer to it), run some traces as asked and submitted the logs.

I suggest contacting Support if you've encountered this or a similar issue (perhaps with another domain).

  • Just did a quick test on Firefox, and adding facebook.com into the exceptions doe now appear to block both facebook and www.facebook on a normal non https: connection too.

(actually I noticed this working on IE yesterday, and was going to update this today, but I guess that as the update must have been pushed to my machine automatically this was coincidental
