ad by lyrics

Hi,

I am being attacked at home by some kind of adware virus, that I can’’’’t seem to remove.

It posts adds and runs scripts on all my browsers, rendering them un usable. Right clicking the ads shows “ad by lyrics”.

I have uninstalled everything that is recent, and I tried the malicious software removal tool, and Norton av, and Sophos. MSRT removed 61 instances of something else. Nothing seems to work on this, and there is no info on the web, except for what seems is old solutions to similar but not the same maleware.

I am at work now, but I need to solve this issue!

Thanks,

Bill

  • You don't say what Sophos program(s) you have tried.  You have posted under the EndUser Protection board and hence that implies you have a managed copy of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows and hence you should contact your IT department for help.  Of course if you have only got a free tool from Sophos (like the Sophos Virus Removal Tool) then you should have posted under the 'Free Tools' board - I'm only saying all of this because it's hard to know where to start from a Sophos software angle in order to help.  Therefore it's probably best to ignore anything Sophos and simply advise:

    1. When you say 'ad by lyrics' I think you meant to 'Ads by LyricsSay'
    2. If point one is true then it's just (I say 'just' but hey) just a case of you removing the program and deleting any browser extensions/add-ons it installed.
      1. Open Program and Features from Control Panel (shortcut: Start | Run | Type: appwiz.cpl | Press return).  Scroll down the list while looking for a program called 'LyricsSay-1' (or similar).  Uninstall it.
      2. In your web browser (e.g., Chrome or Firefox) open the dialog that lists the installed extensions (Chrome) or Add-ons (Firefox).  Firefox allows you to open the add-ons with the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+Shift+A or by typing about:addons into the address bar.  There isn't a keyboard shortcut in Chrome but you can type chrome://extensions/ into the address bar to get to it.  Once you get there you are looking for 'LyricSay-1' (or similar).  Disable and remove the extension/add-on when you find them.  Then restart your browser.

    Hopefully that should do it.
