Microsoft Virtual Machine and Sophos Firewall

I am running win xp as a host machine to Virtual PC which has Server 2008installed, and is configured for DNS DHCP and as a file server (192.168.1.250).  Everything works fine, when the win xp sophos firewall is switched off, but when I switch it on I can't get DHCP or DNS.  I tried setting some global rules for remote and local addresses to my server IP (192.168.1.250) and setting it to high priority, to no joy.

Can anybody help me please?

  • Hello lemonskev,

trial and error is not the best method :smileywink:. The client firewall log should tell you what is blocked and why. There might be one or more IP protocols besides TCP, UDP and GRE involved (I have for example seen OSPF during tests).

  • Brilliant thanks.  No more trial and error for me :)

Here are the 2 rules I created for anyone intersted or having the same problem, one for DHCP and one for DNS:

    Where the Protocol is UDP

and the local port is BOOTPS, NETBIOS NS, NETBIOS DGM

    Allow it

    Where the protocol is UDP

and the local address is 192.168.1.250

    Allow it

    Regards,

    Kev
