Can't install MS Update KB890830

Hi,

I have a problem installing the latest update patch for MS KB890830 (Malicious Software Removal Tool).

Last time I deactivated the live scan functionallity in Sophos and installation of the MS update works flawless.

Now if I deactivate all scan functions in Sophos the MS patch seems to be installed but after rebooting the client a popup shows a prompt to install the patch again.

No error messages are shown during patch installtion.

Any hints on how to solve this issue?

Any hints are welcome ;)

  • Hello pfleckenstein,

I haven't heard that specific (Sophos) settings are needed to install updates. KB890830 even states that You do not have to disable or remove your antivirus program - an unusually outspoken statement by Microsoft pertaining to antivirus, even more so considering their generally meandering language when they have to mention it.

Anyway - is this the only patch causing troubles and do you update regularly and frequently? Just asking because MSRT is special as it is updated each month and I've seen Windows Update "catching up" on all versions you didn't run since the last one. Is it the January 2014 version which is re-offered? BTW - which OS version? I think that if update did download MSRT and attempted to run it there will be an entry in the update history. Furthermore, when the tool runs it writes to %Windir%\debug\mrt.log. This should help to narrow down the problem.
