Programmatic access, invalid, and the outlook trust center

So i recently ran into an issue caused by the virus scanner not being recognized by windows security center.

When a user tries to access outlook programatically, an error is displayed: "a program is trying to access e-mail address information stored in outlook. if this is unexpected, click deny and verify your antivirus is up to date"

When this has happened with previous virus scanners, it generally means that the virus scanner needs a reinstall or is otherwise not detected by the OS. However sophos seems to be working fine, and looking at a few ohter computers, outlook just does not seem to detect sohpos as being a system virus scanner.

I am looking for other workarounds on the outlook side of things, but why is sophos not detected by security center? is this a bug with sophos? i am attaching both error messages. The second one, is outlook saying that the antivirus status is invalid.

I am wondering if it can be fixed on the sophos side. Outlook 2010, 2013, trust center etc should be able to detect that sophos is installed and right now i guess it does not. Can you explain at all?

  • The Windows security center talks to SAV and normally it works fine.  There is article http://sophos.com/kb/58307 though but you don't mention you see a balloon pop-up that advises the local AV is out of date.

    The main reason for the Windows security center (WSC) alerting that the AV is out of day is that...the av is out of date though the installation may appear OK so first thing to check is it has the latest version installed and is up to date.  Fastest way to check:  the IDE file called age-agmw.ide was released about 11am today (UTC).  Is this file in the Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\ folder on the endpoint computer?  If so it's up to date.

    However in this case it may not be an antivirus issue.  I've read this article which is linked below, and is for Outlook 2010 as you mentioned....

    Is it that SAV isn't talking to the WSC, or is it Microsoft very loosely suggesting the reader gets an AV product because of viruses and this 2010 article is a rehash of the Outlook 2007 article?  Not sure but consider this line...

    Under certain conditions, installing an antivirus program and keeping it updated regularly might prevent this security warning from appearing again.

    ...what are the 'certain conditions'.  I'm saying this because if you don't know them you can't resolve the problem.

    And the cause section of that article says...

    These security warnings appear when a program attempts to access your contact information in the Outlook Address Book, or attempts to send email on your behalf....Your email administrator may have allowed specific add-ins....other programs [aren't] trusted, and a security warning appears because...viruses were able to access Outlook....

    • Programs that start automatically    It is possible that the program started automatically. For example, a program tries to automatically send an email message by using the Item.Send method in the Outlook object model.
    • Programs that you start    It is also possible that you started the program. For example, you are using a program to synchronize your PDA or mobile device with Outlook data.

    ...which is nothing to do with antivirus.

    Obviously check the computer is up to date, check if a reinstall of SAV fixes the issue (may well fix it), and if there is still a problem it's probably not related to Sophos and it's communication with WSC.
