Unable to upgrade SEC 5.0 to 5.2.1 after performing manual remote DB upgrade first

Hello all,

In the process of upgrading our SEC 5.0 server to 5.2.1 we ran into the following issue. The management server and DB server are on different dedicated nodes which has been working fine with version 5.0. Because I do not have the appropriate rights to run the DB upgrade through the 5.2.1 Installer I had to have a DBA perform the manual upgrade on the SQL Server node as described in the Sophos KB, following the Domain member upgrade steps to go from 5.0 to 5.2.1 (http://bit.ly/1gBPf0X). The DB upgrade went fine and all tables appear to have been created and access for the SOPHOS521 DB has been configured to be the same as the existing SOPHOS50 DB. Upon completion I went back to the SEC management server and re-ran the SEC 5.2.1 Installer which still states that the server cannot be upgraded:

"The server cannnot be upgraded. The database must be upgraded first."

I've verified that the remote DB configuration in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\EE\Management Tools is still set to our current SOPHOS50 DB.

I am stuck at this point and was hoping others may have encountered this issue and had some hints as to where to look next so we can complete our SEC 5.2.1 upgrade.

Thanks,

Pepijn Bruienne.

  • Hi,

If the databases have all been created correctly I suspect database permssions are the problem.

Out of interest, what's in the SEC installer log (C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Management Installer\Sophos_bootstrapper [timestamp].log), at this check?

Are you able to ask the SQL admin to run the SEC installer if he's also an admin on the management server computer (maybe make him temporarily), just to see if it gets past that check?  You can cancel the installer afterwards.

Maybe aske the SQL admin to run SQL Profiler looking for permission problems during the check when you run the installer?

    Regards,

    Jak
