Setting Sophos As Primary Update Location in Sophos Deployment Packager

Hello there,

I am trying to make an endpoint client install for offsite users that updates from Sophos and I am using the Sophos Deployment Packager. How do I point the package to update from Sophos? The location asks for a UNC and I have seen on the forums that it is not a good idea to put the full address to the sophos update server due to it changing from time to time.

What do I do?

Thanks

  • Hello Crayadder,

that's to comply with the license agreement. If you do not want these computers to be managed (i.e. you do not include RMS) you can simply define the Secondary location as Sophos. The client will first try your regular Primary location and as this fails fall back to the Secondary. This introduces some latency and causes an error to be written to the updating logs but has otherwise no adverse effect.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

  • Hi QC,

Thanks for the information. That would be useful to have in the Userguide. I would love to manage these computers, but my workplace is taking forever to get around to installing Sophos with an update server outside of the firewall. One day.

    Cheers,

  • Hmmm...

It won't let me leave the primary update location blank. I put in our update server address in the form http://update.updatesite.bc.ca and when I press Build Package I get the following error: Primary update location is not in the correct format. Enter either a UNC folder path or HTTP location and try again. I tried with and without a User and Password. I tried leaving off the http:// in case it was adding it automatically. Still the same result.

    What gives?

  • Hello Cray,

can't test right now - either you need a trailing slash or a folder. Just play around a little, find something else SDP accepts, can be UNC - it's supposed not to work when AutoUpdate uses it anyway ;-)

  • Hi Christian,

Well, just fyi, adding a folder at the end of the string worked.

Thanks for your help and time.

  • Hello Cray,

thanks for confirming this. Actually it is no surprise - in the SDP you use enter the location as in the client GUI, i.e. the complete path and not the "base" share as in SEC's policies (where SEC adds the CIDs\ subfolder, the subscription short tag - Snnn\ - and the product folder, e.g. SAVSCFXP\). Theoretically you could have a virtual host which publishes \\Sever\SophosUpdate\CIDs\S123\SAVSCFXP\ as its root, but that's rather unusual.
